Tangail District at a Glance
Tradition in history, Tangail is one of the largest districts of Bangladesh. Tangail district was established on December 1, 1969. Although there are different legends about the name Tangail, according to historians, the name Tangail is derived from Tan Ail i.e. high ail. Tangail district is bordered by Mymensingh and Gazipur districts to the east, Sirajganj to the west, Jamalpur to the north and Dhaka and Manikganj districts to the south. The area of Tangail district near the capital city is 3424 square kilometers. The district has 12 upazilas, 11 municipalities, 118 unions and 2516 villages with a population of about 40 lakhs. This district consists of lowlands along the Yamuna, Dhaleswari, Bangsai, Jhenai rivers, grasslands, vast fertile plains, small and large hills and forests of Madhupur. The natural beauty of this district is as charming as the rich history and tradition here. The people of this district have a glorious role in the anti-British movement, language movement and the great liberation war.
Tangail was a subdivision of Mymensingh district till 1969 AD. In 1969, Tangail subdivision was upgraded to a district. This district is located on the banks of river Yamuna. The Laujong River flows through it. District Commissioner's Office, Circuit House and DC Bungalow were built in 1969.

The main objective of district branding is to promote the overall development of the district by developing the ongoing initiatives and potentials of the district and to highlight the district at domestic and international level.
