Topography

The geographical location of Tangail district in Bangladesh is characterized by a low floodplain near the jamuna River south of the high plateau of the Madhupur region. The district has an area of 3,375 square kilometers and an average elevation of 14 meters above sea level. The district is divided into 12 upazilas, which are further divided into 120 union parishads and 2,516 villages. The major rivers of the district are jamuna, Dhaleswari, Jhenai, Banshi, Laujong, Langulia, Elongjani, Jugni, Pauli, Fatikjani and Turag. The district has a tropical climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters. Average annual rainfall is about 2000 mm. The district is mainly an agricultural area with paddy, jute, sugarcane, wheat, mustard and vegetables as major crops. The district is also famous for textile industry and Tangail Saree and Chamcham.

Biodiversity

The biodiversity of Tangail district of Bangladesh is rich and varied, as it has a variety of ecosystems, habitats and species. The district has a large area of sal forest, one of the best in the country, as well as wetlands, grasslands and agricultural land. The district has many plants and animals, some of which are endemic, rare or endangered.

According to a study by Rahman et al. (2019), Madhupur National Park in Tangail district has 176 plant species, including 73 tree species, 22 shrub species, 27 creepers, 45 medicinal plants, 8 grasses and 1 palm species. The park's dominant tree species are Sal (Shorea robusta), Kadam (Antocephalus chinensis), Koroi (Albizia procera), and Jam (Syzygium cumini). The park has many orchids, ferns, lichens and mosses. Some of the notable plant species in the garden are sandalwood (Santalum album), sundari (Heritiera foams), kurchi (Holarhena antidysenterica), and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera).

The fauna of Tangail district consists of 190 species including 21 mammals, 140 birds and 29 snakes. Mammals include spotted deer (Axus axus), barking deer (Muntiacus muntjac), wild boar (Sus scrofa), rhesus macaque (Macaca multa), jackal (Canis aureus), mongoose (Herpestes edwardii), and pangolin (Manis crassicaudata). . Birds include peacocks (Pavo cristatus), parakeets (Positacula spp), kingfishers (Alcedo spp), woodpeckers (Dendrocopos spp), hornbills (Buceros bicornis), and eagles (Aquila spp). Snakes include the cobra (Naja naja), python (Python molurus), krait (Bungarus spp.), and rat snake (Ptyas mucosa).

The biodiversity of Tangail district faces many threats due to human activities such as deforestation, poaching, encroachment, overgrazing, pollution and climate change. The district needs urgent conservation measures to protect its natural resources and maintain ecological balance. Some of the possible steps are creating awareness among local people, enforcing laws and regulations, establishing protected areas and corridors, promoting sustainable livelihoods and ecotourism, restoring degraded habitats and monitoring and researching the status of biodiversity.
